A Closer Look at Yoga
The word Yoga means "union” or “identification”. Through the practise of a huge range of postures, Yoga seeks to purify the mind, body and spirit leading to a sense of harmony and has many health benefits.
The exercises were originally based upon the movements of animals whose movements are more fluid than those of humans. Slow, physical movements are combined with still positions, correct breathing is very important. The spiritual tradition of yoga training has been passed down from generation to generation but in recent times, yoga has become available all over the world in classes, videos and books. Yoga is used in different ways in the modern world to its ancient tradition, but many still seek the spiritual benefits as well as a method to improve health and fitness.
There are many different style of yoga with Hatha being the most common in the western world; other styles include Astanga, Bikram, Iyengar, Kundalini, Sivananda, Viniyoga and the more recently developed power Yoga. Classes usually last around an hour, for maximum benefit, it would be best to practise every day, but not necessarily for very long.
