Thought Field Therapy

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a mind-body-energy psychotherapy, which alleviates negative emotions by gently tapping on  acupuncture points, which eliminates the energetic cause of the problem.

The technique was developed by Dr. Roger Callahan, a cognitive psychologist who was treating a patient with an extreme fear of water; he used the theory in Chinese medicine that energy flows along meridian lines combined with the theories of applied Kinesiology and tapped various meridian points on his patient;

"I was totally unprepared for what happened.  As I tapped under her eye, Mary said, "It's gone, my fear of water, it"s gone!  I dont have those awful feelings in my stomach any more."  I suggested that we go down to the swimming pool adjacent to my office to see if this was really true.  I expected her to resist as usual, but in fact had to hurry to keep up with her.  For the first time in her life, she bent down, put her head close to the water and began splashing it on her face"

TFT believes that an individual suffers distress when thinking about a problem and this thought field disturbs the bodys energy.    Removal of the perturbations (i.e. the information that governs the emotional experience) from the thought field leads to loss of the negative emotion - the individual can still explore and discuss their memory of the problem but now without the accompanying distress.

The client is asked to think about their problem and the perceived level of distress this causes, the emotion is scored on a on a 10 or 11 point scale.  1 or 0 is the total absence of distress, with 10 as the maximum.   Specific meridian points are then tapped whilst thinking of the problem and then the rate is distress is ranked again.  A sequence known as the 9-gamut is then applied which involves tapping a meridian point whilst carrying out nine simple movements.

It is common for the a score of ten to go down to one or two in a single session, thought field therapy is versatile and can be used alongside other forms of psychotherapy, it is useful for emotional issues such as stress, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, guilt, phobias, addictions, allergies, jealousy and psychosomatic issues.
