Thai massage (Thai Yoga Massage) has a foundation in traditional Ayurvedic techniques and traditional Chinese medicine. Legend has it that it was developed by the famous healer Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha who is said to have been the personal physician to Buddha, who lived around 500 BC.

Thai Yoga Massage stimulates, opens and balances the flow of energy through the sen lines an energy system made up of 72,000 lines in the body.    Thai massage looks somewhat like a combination of shiatsu and yoga.   In Thailand, a session can last as long as three hours, but this is uncommon in the west.   Clothes are kept on during the session and no oils are used.  A Thai Massage therapist uses rhythmic massage, acupressure, gentle twisting and meditation, they use their hands, feet, elbows and knees, and will place the client in a variety of stretched positions for short periods of time.  The session can look like a rhythmic dance between the therapist and client, in Thailand there are some very energetic practitioners and a Thai Massage can seem akin to a wrestling match, in the west, the practice is not so robust!

Thai Massage aims to embody the four divine states as described in Buddhist teachings - loving kindness, compassion, vicarious joy and equanimity, a Thai massage can create a clear, calm and balanced state.
