Transcendental meditation 'eases heart disease'
19/11/2009
Research carried out by the Medical College of Wisconsin with the Maharishi College in Iowa randomly assigned 201 African Americans to meditate or make lifestyle changes. The average age was 59 and all had narrowing of the arteries.
The lifestyle group received education classes to teach them to make dietary changes and take more exercise; the meditation group practiced twice daily for 20 minutes. After 9 years, the meditation group had a 47% reduction in deaths, heart attacks and strokes.
People in the meditation group were much more likely to stick with their programme after 9 years - practising at least once a day. Many of those in the diet and exercise group, by contrast, had slipped back into previous habits.
Larger studies across many ethnic groups are needed to probe the results further.
