St Johns Wort & Black Cohosh Effective for Menopause
04/03/2006
A recent study by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists with 301 women suffering with menopausal symptoms for a minimum of three months found that a combination of herbal medicine was extremely effecive.
A combination of St Johns Wort used traditionally and with great effectiveness for depression, and Black Cohosh which has long been used for symptoms of the menopause; the results were very promising and prove a useful natural alternative to Hormone replacement therapy.
Half of the participants took the St. John's Wort and Black Cohosh, while the other half took a placebo.
Tablets consisted of 1 milligram of triterpene glycosides - the substances believed to be responsible for Black Cohosh's activity, the St. John's wort component contained 0.25 milligrams of the active ingredient hypericine.
After 16 weeks, women taking the herbal formula showed a 50 percent reduction in symptoms such as hot flashes and sweating and depression fell by over 40%. Those on the placebo experienced a 19.6% reduction and a reduction in depression of 12.7 percent.
Arguably, results may have been even better using the natural forms of these herbs with the wide variety of substances in correct and natural balance. Herbs are effective often due to their very complex chemical structure, that even today, science cannot begin to decipher or replicate.
