Commercial pet foods are distinctly lacking in the correct nutrients for cats and dogs and do not meet basic dietary needs.   Ten years ago, in 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published a paper contending that processed pet food suppresses the immune system and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases. Dogs and cats would in a natural state eat raw meat including the bones and gut contents which would include grasses and herbs; they would also scavenge fruit and vegetables.   Such a natural diet would ensure optimum health and avoid the extensive dental disease our pets suffer; in the region of 50% of cats dogs need veterinary treatment for dental disease by the age of 8.  Feeding the right food with the correct nutrients ensures your pet will have healthy teeth and gums.  

Commercial pet foods are made up largely of cooked cereal grains which are difficult to digest.  Most pet foods have grains as their top ingredients, but nature designed cats and dogs to be primarily meat eaters. More worryingly, pet foods contain Soya, animal bi-products, a vast array of chemicals, genetically modified ingredients, and perhaps the saddest indictment of the pet food industry is that condemned meat is routinely included in pet food.

A chemical called Pentobarbital used to euthanase animals can be found in many major pet foods, many holistic veterinarians feel that daily ingestion of pentobarbital is detrimental to the long term health of our pets.
