Eating organic, natural foods is now a way of life for many, but what we put on our skin is just as important. We are exposed to a vast array of chemicals in beauty care products. The cosmetic industry is notoriously under-regulated; nail varnish is sold in tiny bottles because it is a highly toxic substance not because nails are small! Many cosmetics include toxic, carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting materials. Studies by The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that 884 chemicals used in personal care products and cosmetics are known to be toxic. These chemicals can cause a variety of health issues including sensitive skin, respiratory problems, skin rashes, premature ageing, headaches, cancer and others. Misleading labels are common, some of which describe a product as organic when in fact it only has a small amount of organic ingredients alongside a wide range of synthetic substances. The word “natural” is also often used, yet skincare products only need 1% natural ingredients!
“A cosmetic manufacturer may use any ingredient or raw material and market the final product without government approval.” FDA
