McTimoney Chiropractic was developed by John McTimoney in the 1950s. After experiencing the benefits of chiropractic work himself, he studied the therapy; he later began to experiment with the techniques and believed that the body has its own self-healing ability and that chiropractors facilitate this process. The movements were refined, the whole body was incorporated and McTimoneyChiropractic was born.
The McTimoney approach is based on a whole body assessment of the individual including general well being. The aim is to holistically facilitate a return to optimum health. Skeletal misalignment can cause the body to compensate which can cause problems such as lower back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder problems, migraine and headaches; this is why the whole body is assessed at each treatment.
A full case history will be taken with particular reference to previous accidents, falls, injuries and illnesses. The bones and joints will be checked for imbalances some of which may be very subtle and require a finely-tuned sense of touch. McTimoney uses a method called the toggle recoil adjustment which changes the tension surrounding a joint. It is a gentle movement that uses the natural elasticity of tendons to relieve tension and is suitable even for babies and the elderly. These adjustments are made not only to the spine, but also, unlike a normal chiropractic treatment - the sacrum, pelvis and the cranium. Postural advice will also be given to help adjustments hold and minimise future problems.
McTimoney Chiropractic is useful for Migraine and tension headaches, Sciatica, sports injuries, RSI, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, back and joint pain and digestive problems. It is also seen as a preventative therapy that can greatly improve overall health and well being.
