The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution reported that the UK needs to achieve a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 if we are to contribute to an avoidance of significant climate change. The domestic sector is crucial to the achievement of this target as it represents almost a third of the UK's energy.
Fridges, freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and lamps have a labelling system in order that consumers can identify the most energy efficient products that have the least impact upon the environment.
In some case, (but not all), an energy efficient appliance may cost more in the short term but will offer considerable savings on running costs over time and minimise damage to the environment.
The system uses an energy grading from A to G. An A-rated appliance will use about half the electricity of a Grated appliance.
The Energy Saving Trust (EST) manages a labelling scheme for products of proven energy efficiency (e.g. white goods, boilers, low-energy lamps, heating controls). These products carry the Energy Efficiency Recommended label.
Endorsed products can be found at www.saveenergy.co.uk/appliances under the energy efficient recommended database.
