The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek Chiropraktikos meaning "effective treatment by hand". It is a treatment method that is perhaps one of the most well known and well respected complementary therapies and was devised in Canada in the late 19th Century. Daniel Palmer studied the ancient peoples and found that they had used spinal manipulation to give relief from a wide variety of ailments, he went on to develop his own methods of manipulation. There is evidence that many civilisations including the Toltecs, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptians and Incas used spinal manipulation.
Distortions in the spinal area due to accident, injury or lifestyle have a direct impact on the entire body, as well as being specifically useful for back problems, because the spinal cord carries nerves to the whole body and sends information to the brain about what is occurring in other areas, it can benefit other disorders.
The consultation will include a case history, physical examination and sometimes x-rays will be taken. The treatment itself involves manipulation and pressure along the spine. A treatment may last between 10 and 30 minutes, a course of up to five treatments may be required for maximum benefit, you may be given exercises to carry out at home.
Chiropractors undertake extensive training and utilise modern technology.
