Cinnamon is one of these spices and has been around for centuries, mentioned both in the Bible and in Ancient Egypt. It is found to reduce blood sugar levels in diabetics, the benefits extend to many people who have a problem regulating blood sugar levels without even realising it.
Cinnamon releases a compound called MHCP which mimics insulin, activates its receptor, and works synergistically with insulin in cells. It has also been found to neutralise free radicals, damaging cells which are elevated in diabetics.
Other effects on the blood are anti- inflammatory properties and the ability to help blood flow more easily, helping prevent the red blood cells from clumping together.
This spice is also an anti-microbial, which means it helps stop the growth of bacteria in the gut, particularly yeasts such as Candida. It has been shown to be effective on yeast that is resistant to anti-fungal medication.
Apart from its physical effects, the scent of cinnamon in recent tests show that it boosts brain activity and enhances cognitive processing and has positive effects on recognition memory, working memory, and visual motor speed. More tests are now being done for its effect on the elderly and anxiety.
